What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A UTI is a common infection of the urethra or bladder, causing pain and burning sensations. Importantly, if left untreated infection can travel to the kidneys.

So, if you suspect someone in your family has a Urinary Tract Infection, it’s important that they get urgent care.

What are the symptoms of a Urinary Tract infection (and who gets them)

The top symptoms of a UTI are:

  • Frequency urinating.
  • The urgency to go to the loo, but small amounts of urine are being passed
  • Pain or burning.
  • Feeling like you can’t empty your bladder
  • Fever.
  • Pelvic and loin pain.
  • Confusion and more falls or instability in the elderly.
  • Bedwetting in toilet-trained children.
  • Dehydration from not wanting to drink because of the burning pain when passing urine.

Who is most likely to get a Urinary Tract infection?

  • Females are much more prone to UTIs due to the anatomy of the urethra being close to the anus. It’s easy to get cross-contamination when you’ve passed a bowel motion. That’s why we always advise wiping from front to back.
  • Children are also at risk but often present with irritable behaviour. Also, they may be feverish as a primary symptom. Another indication may be a toilet-trained child who suddenly starts to wet the bed.
  • Did you know that male urinary tract infection is common in older men. Sometimes this is linked to conditions like enlarged prostates or kidney stones, which slow urine flow.
  • Pregnant women are at higher risk of UTIs, and it is important to get early care to prevent ongoing infections.
  • If you have kidney stones, it can increase the chance of a UTI infection taking hold.

Urinary tract (UTI) infection treatment

It’s not uncommon for the early symptoms of UTIs to be overlooked. As many men don’t realise that a male urinary tract infection is quite common, sometimes men soldier on.

Children, don’t necessarily complain of the burning but might talk about having a sore tummy, holding their genitals or having a fever and irritability.

The main factor in working out treatment is establishing if an infection is present. To do this, a urine sample should be taken.

Our nurses can do a dipstick check to look for protein in urine immediately.

Then, if we detect a protein is present, the sample can be sent to the laboratory for culture. As it takes some time for the culture to grow, our team can assess if antibiotics are needed. The lab result will tell us if the culture is resistant to the antibiotics selected. In this case, we will let you know if you need to change antibiotics.

First aid for Urinary Tract Infections

  1. Drink plenty of water to help flush out bacteria. Even if you are having trouble passing urine, you must keep drinking.
  2. Take simple painkillers like paracetamol to bring down fever and reduce pain.
  3. Ural Sachets will help take the sting out of burning urine sensations. Our onsite pharmacist can advise you on this.
  4. Some people find cranberry juice helpful.
