How do you know if you have high blood pressure?
Amazingly, although a common condition, hypertension, or high blood pressure, has no or few warning signs or symptoms. Sometimes things like headaches, nose bleeds and shortness of breath may indicate that your blood pressure is very high. However, untreated, spikes in blood pressure can lead to severe conditions like heart attacks, strokes and diseases like chronic kidney failure and eye damage.
So, it is vital that after the age of 40, you get annual blood pressure checks. If you are under 40, ideally, get two yearly blood pressure checks.
Pop into our East Auckland Nurse-led Clinic, where you can have a blood pressure test done. Blood pressure monitoring is quick, easy and painless. Our experienced nurses can advise you if there is anything to be concerned about and, if needed, arrange for further tests and to see a doctor.
When should you attend our nurse-led clinic for hypertention?
As we age, the risk of developing hypertension increases. So it makes sense to have regular blood pressure checks. However, there are risk factors which increase the likelihood of getting high blood pressure.
Conditions which increase the risk of hypertension include:
- Smoking
- A family history of diabetes, heart attack or stroke
- High blood pressure during pregnancy
- Obesity
- Kidney disease
- Ethnicity: Maori, Pacifica or South Asian.
What is the difference between systemic hypertension and pulmonary hypertension?
What is hypertension or high blood pressure?
As your heart beats, blood is pumped around your body. Next, it travels through a network of vessels, and the amount of push against the vessel as the blood passes through is the blood pressure.
When we view the results of a blood pressure test or reading has two numbers. The top number is the pressure when your heart beats, and the second is as your heart relaxes. It is written like this 120/75.
There are lots of reasons for blood pressure appearing higher during the test, like stress or worry as the nurse takes the reading. So, High blood pressure is when your readings are regularly above recommended levels. Therefore you might need three separate readings over three months to be sure you have hypertension.

完成健康询问会诊后便可以与医生会诊。
