How do I know if I have sprained an ankle, wrist or joint ?
The weekend are common times for sprains, as they are often associated with sports injuries. But it’s easy to sprain an ankle or knee with a fall or accident at any time.
Fortunately, our urgent care team are here to help.
A sprain is a soft tissue injury that occurs near a joint. Therefore, ankles, wrists and knees are the main types of sprains. A sprain differs from strain (which is a muscle tear).
Pop in if your symptoms are getting worse. Its good to know that ACC will help you cover the costs of treatment for a sprain.
Get urgent care for sprains
Anyone who experiences significant loss of function or severe pain should get a doctor’s care urgently.
Moreover, see a doctor if your symptoms are not improving within two days, or earlier if worsening.
Watch out for symptoms of a bad sprain including:
- tenderness
- swelling
- bruising
- a popping feeling and instability
- pain when trying to walk on a sprained ankle
First Aid for Sprains
Of course, the most common type of sprain is a sprained ankle. Naturally, getting your weight off the ankle is very important.
Follow the RICE first aid for sprains:
- REST: Assist the patient to rest in a comfortable position. Generally, this means sitting with support under the sprained limb or lying down if possible.
- ICE: Next, apply ice for significant pain. An ice pack will help to reduce pain as well as inflammation. Also, it can be applied for 10 to 20 minutes at a time and then be repeated once if pain persists. Remember, to get the best effect from the ice and to avoid burning the skin, always wrap an ice pack in a damp cloth before applying it.
- COMPRESSION: Consider applying a compressing bandage on an injured limb. Ensure that firm and even pressure is applied. However, be careful not to slow blood circulation to the affected limb’s fingers or toes. If the bandage increases your pain, DO NOT persist with it.
- ELEVATE: Keep the sprained area elevated and at rest. meanwhile, arrange for urgent care. Ensure rest with elevation of the injured area for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Consider taking simple pain relief such as paracetamol.
