Blood Pressure checks

Getting a blood pressure check is a routine health test. It’s good to know if you have high or low blood pressure as an overall measure of health.

What is a blood pressure check?

A quick check of blood pressure can establish if you have:

  1.  hypertension (high blood pressure), considered 140/90mmHg or higher.
  2. hypotension (low blood pressure).  Considered 90/60mmHg or lower
  3. normal blood pressure in a range of 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg

Its actually hard to know without testing as there aren’t a lot of symptoms. However, hypertension can cause serious health concerns later such as a stroke or a heart attack.

If you have ongoing blood pressure concerns and NZ GP will suggest to monitor blood pressure with regular checks.

Can dizziness be a sign of low blood pressure?

Low blood pressure has more telltale signs that high blood pressure. The symptoms that make most people seek urgent care are:

  • dizziness, or
  • fainting
  • nausea

Actually, low blood pressure is not generally an indicator of serious illness. It can be brought on:

  • if you lost a lot of blood following an injury or surgery
  • during the 1st and 2nd trimesters of pregnancy
  • due to a long term condition like a heart condition or in some cases diabetes
However, sudden low blood pressure can be one of the symptoms of:
  • dehydration
  • allergic reaction or anaphylaxis: accompanied by breathing problems or itching
  • a severe bacterial infection or Septic shock
  • vitamin deficiencies (such as Vit B) later causing anaemia
So, in NZ, we suggest getting checked and monitor your blood pressure if your symptoms are not just passing or very intense. Moreover, if you have regular concerns with dizziness etc., it is possible to buy a home blood pressure monitor in NZ so you can do tests at home. Do tell your GP you are monitoring your blood pressure, though. Remember, hypertension should be checked regularly by a nurse.

Getting a blood pressure test at East Care

Its not uncommon for us to take your blood pressure during a medical consultation.

It’s simple to have a check:

  • first, we’ll ask a few questions
  • then we’ll get you to roll up a sleeve and slip on the cuff
  • next, we fill the cuff with air, and it will feel tight. The first number is the systolic pressure which reads your heart pushing blood out
  • breathe easy and relax while we take the reading
  • The cuff will release and this will tell us the diastolic pressure
Let us know if you feel dizziness or unwell.
