What sports injuries need urgent care?
As an after-hours clinic, we see a lot of sports injuries. Our East and South Auckland community love their sports, so come and see us for help with the following:
- strains, especially to the back, calf or neck
- sprained ankles, wrists or knees
- dislocations
- head injuries, concussions or black eyes
- fractures or broken bones that need x-ray or plaster casting
Remember, if you’ve hurt your spine or head while playing sport, you need to be checked for concussion or back injuries.
Accidents that occur while playing sports will have an ACC claim, so we can help with the forms. Moreover, we can help refer you to our onsite physiotherapist, Mercy Radiology, emergency dentist or specialist.
Medical conditions that arise while playing sport that need urgent care
Alongside accidents, it’s also common for people to have other medical concerns when playing sport that needs to be seen by a doctor.
Get medical advice or diagnosis if you experience:
- chest pains
- severe headache
- dehydration
- signs of changes in blood pressure
- dizziness or lightheadedness
- shortness of breath, especially if you have asthma
- raised heart rate
First Aid for sports accidents
While there are many types of accidents that can occur while playing sports, basic first aid is often similar.
For strains, sprains and possible fractures, use the RICE approach.
Rest; Ice; Compress and Elevate.
Your team should have a comprehensive first aid kit including:
- An ice pack kept cool in a freezer or chiller
- A Tubigrip compression bandage
- Plenty of water for rehydration
Read our guides to find out when you should come to our urgent care centre for a sprain, strains or if you need an x-ray.
For wounds, lacerations or cuts, good first aid includes:
- always have clean hands before you treat a wound
- rinse the area with sterile fluid or antiseptic solution
- cover with a clean, sterile dressing
- apply firm direct pressure (with the exception of eye injuries where you should gently hold the dressing to the eye socket)
- Ensure your tetanus vaccinations are up to date.
- Come to urgent care if the injury or laceration needs stitches, bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes, or excessive swelling or pain is apparent.
