If you’ve had an accident and suspect a bone might be broken or fractured, you’ll need an urgent x-ray. Fortunately, our GPs can refer you to get an x-ray onsite at our Botany Road health hub in Howick. X-ray imaging is open late night and after hours. Mercy Radiology Botany is open for x-rays 8.30 am – 9 pm, everyday.

What conditions might I need to get an urgent x-ray for?
Have you hurt a limb and are experiencing trouble moving it? It’s not uncommon to fracture a bone even if you only had a minor accident or a fall.
Getting an x-ray is the best way to diagnose the cause of limb pain, which could be breaks or fractures. Keep in mind, if you have Osteoporosis, you may be more prone to fractures.
But it’s also a sensible path to checking out chest complaints where people have signs of pneumonia.
Signs you might need a chest x-ray for pneumonia include:
- chest pain
- a persistent cough that produces mucus
- strained breathing
- fever

Will ACC cover my x-ray costs?
Generally, people need an x-ray following an accident. So, if you’ve been playing some weekend sport and strain or sprained a joint of limb, it’s worth checking there is no break or fracture. It will be classed as an accident, so ACC will help with your trip to an urgent care GP and x-ray costs. This applies even if you need an x-ray after hours or late night.
At East Care, we’re lucky to have East Auckland’s full-service Radiology and imaging team onsite at our health hub. So, our GPs can refer you directly to Mercy Radiology Botany for your x-ray. Next, we’ll be sent the results by the Mercy team to work out the next steps. Furthermore, if you had a fracture, you can pop back for ongoing care in our Nurse-led fracture clinics. From GP to x-ray, to after care, you can do it all in the same Howick location.
Signs that you need an x-ray urgently for a broken bone or fracture
Are you unsure how serious your injury is? Sometimes we notice an injury gets worse as time goes on. You might be surprised to hear that x-rays are the most common reason people go to urgent care!
Some symptoms that suggest you might need an x-ray:
- Bruising or discolouration – If you’re seeing a lot of colourful changes to your skin, it’s a sign of tissue damage. A sprain or a strain can cause bruising, but if you have darkening colour, there could be a fracture.
- Swelling – Of course its common to have swelling when you injure yourself, but monitor the amount. It could be the sign of something more serious like a broken bone.
- Misshaped or deformity of the joint of limb – if you see any unusual bends or bows to limbs or joints, it’s definitely time to get an x-ray.
- However, if you see a severe bend with an obvious break, go straight to the hospital or call an ambulance on 111. Chances are it will need to be operated on or fixed in a hospital environment.

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:
- NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
- International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration
On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.
Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.
This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.
Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.
The length of your first appointment with your new doctor will be as follows:
