What causes iron-deficiency anemia?
If your body doesn’t make enough red blood cells, less oxygen travels through your bloodstream. Subsequetly, you can get a condition called iron-deficiency anemia. Generally, this will show up in a blood test.
Iron deficiency Anemia can occur if you:
- were in an accident or had an operation and lost a lot of blood
- have the inability to absorb iron
- are vegetarian or eat a diet low in iron-rich foods
- Are pregnant, in which case you are likely taking iron pills
- have kidney disease or a renal condition
What are the symptoms iron-deficiency anemia?
As a result of iron deficiency anaemia, you can feel wiped out simply doing everyday tasks. So, iron injections for anaemia can help give you back your get up and go!
Symptoms that you might be a good candidate for an iron infusion include:
- Fatigue and general tiredness
- Muscle weakness
- Soft nails that easily break
- Dizzy spells and lightheadedness
- Breathlessness
What to expect when you get an Iron Infusion
You can expect to feel results quickly because an iron infusion restores iron directly to your bloodstream. Fortunately, it won’t be long before you feel more energetic and can breathe more easily.
- At East Care, IV (Intravenous) Iron Infusions are administered by our Nurse-led Clinics.
- First, our experienced nurses will seat you comfortably. The infusion will take at least 15 minutes. However, the length of the IV infusion will depend on your iron levels.
- Wear a top that allows us to access your arm’s vein easily for the iron injection.
- Within a week, you can expect to feel the first results of the iron infusion. However, it will take up to 3 weeks for your haemoglobin to increase. Comparatively, oral iron pills will take up to 6 months to restore iron. So having an iron injection for anemia is much faster!
Are there Side effects from an iron infusion?
During your appointment, the nurse will keep an eye on your blood pressure, temperature, heart and respiratory rates and monitor for any allergic reaction.
Remember, you’ll need to wait in the clinic for 15 minutes after your infusion so that we can monitor you for any signs of allergy.
Afterwards, you might feel:
- dizzy due to changes in blood pressure
- nauseous or want to vomit
