Why is it important to change a wound dressing?
Have you had an injury, burn or operation which needs to stay carefully dressed with bandages or sterile pads? It’s essential to change the dressing as you heal.
Changing the dressing allows us to:
- remove any stitches
- check for infection
- reapply a fresh dressing with any medicated ointment necessary
Signs you need to get your wound checked and redressed urgently
If you experience any of the following problems with your wound or dressing, it’s best not to wait as infection could set in. Similarly, if you aren’t sure how to care for your wound at home it’s best to see the nurse. Watch out for these symptoms:
- swelling is present around the wound
- the dressing smells unpleasant
- the area feeling increasingly hot
- pain is increasing
- the dressing has leakage on it that is green or yellow
How to change a dressing on a minor wound at home
Home care of small wounds is straightforward if you follow some easy steps:
- Always wash your hands before you start. Also, you could wear gloves is changing a dressing for a family member.
- Gently remove the old dressing and throw away. Try not to disturb any scabs.
- Using cotton wool or a cotton bud, use saline or clean water to clean the wound carefully.
- If there is a mild infection to heal, you can use a medicated ointment like Crystaderm. For a burn, you can use burn cream.
- Cover the wound with a non-stick pad.
- Secure in place with either a clear gauze bandage or Micropore tape.
- Rewash your hands.
If you noticed any signs of worsening infection, contact your GP or come to see our nurse-led clinic. We’ll assess the wound for any concerning infection like Cellulitis.

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:
- NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
- International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration
On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.
Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.
This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.
Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.
The length of your first appointment with your new doctor will be as follows:
