What are Migraines, and when do you need treatment?
Migraines are a debilitating neurological condition. Moreover, they affect every person differently. A migraine headache can range from uncomfortable to absolutely intolerable. Furthermore, they can interfere with day-to-day life.
It’s common to have symptoms of:
- a severe headache and discomfort
- nausea
- sensitive to light and sound.
What migraine support can I get from the Urgent Care team
Understandably, relief is the only thing on your mind when a migraine attacks.
Our GPs will assess your symptoms and can prescribe migraine medication if necessary. As there is an after-hours pharmacy onsite, you can pick up your prescription as you leave East Care.
It’s possible your GP will prescribe a funded medication such as:
- Metoclopramide
- Ondansetron
- Prochlorperazine (the buccal form is only partially funded)
Also, it’s good to have a toolkit to lessen the pain or make the symptoms bearable until your migraine medication starts to work. So check out our first aid tips.
Easily available over-the-counter medication which can help includes:
- Paracetamol
- Paracetamol plus caffeine
- Soluble aspirin
First Aid for treating a Migraine
When a migraine sets in, fast treatment can help lessen the severity and duration of the attack. If you’re waiting for migraine medication to take effect, try these extra steps
- HYDRATE: Increasing your fluid intake is a first step. Naturally, water is best, but drink what you have available so long as it is non-alcoholic.
- COOL: A cold eye mask can make a huge difference. Choose a gel mask that you can keep on hand in the fridge. Use the mask for 5 to 20 minutes. Find a simple mask at your local chemist, or invest in a gel cap that can be heated as well as cooled.
- MASSAGE: Migraine pain can be eased with a neck and shoulder massage to target pressure points. Chat to your physiotherapist or an acupuncturist to help locate the best places to massage.
- SLEEP: Ultimately, the best remedy for migraine pain is often sleeping. Try adding magnesium to your diet which should help with pain but also aid quality sleep.
- TRIGGERS: Finally, when a migraine comes on, try to make a note of what might have triggered it. Note down unusual food or beverages you’ve consumed, changes to routine or stressors. This information will provide you with a bigger picture to look for a pattern of what triggers your migraine symptoms.
