What type of burn needs professional urgent care?

Most minor burn first aid can be treated at home, for instance small scalds or brief contact with something hot. But some burns need immediate, emergency burn treatment and care.

When should you seek burn treatment at Urgent Care?

  • Deep burns that affect layers of skin or have burnt deep tissue. All minor injuries need to be properly dressed.
  • Extensive burns that cover a lot of skin.
  • Burns on sensitive skin including the face, groin, feet or hands (where skin is over a joint).
  • Of course, tamariki have very delicate skin that could easily scar. Also, they may not communicate the pain as readily as adults. Our friendly nurses can assess them.

Remember, for serious burns, called third-degree burns, dial 111 for Emergency services. These burns look white or black and can cause nerve damage. Be aware they might feel numb at first for this reason.

Treating a burn to avoid infection

  • If you have something stuck to the skin it’s best for us to sort that out. Be sure not to pop any blisters which can actually protect the area which could otherwise scar. However, we’ll make sure there is no dirt, foreign bodies of excess skin on the burn before we apply the sterile dressing. 
  • Try to keep the dressing dry while washing.
  • Change your dressing regularly. Check the burn for discharge and come to see us if you notice the wound oozing.
  •  Moreover, if you are still in pain or have symptoms after 48 hours, it’s important you come in for a check.

First Aid for burns

Immediate treatment of a burn is a must. Follow these simple steps as soon as a burn occurs.

  1. COOL: First, cool the burn with tepid,  running water for 20 minutes and then let it dry. If there isn’t a tap nearby use fluid like a drink. Note, do not use ice water. Also, babies and children should not be put in a bath or shower for the full twenty minutes as they can get hypothermia.
  2. COVER: Next cover the burn using a nonstick bandage (non-adherent gauze). However if the burn is paticularly bad, wrap it in clingfilm and come immediately to East Care.
  3. OINTMENT: Later, use a burn cream to increase skin elasticity as the burn heals. 
  4. PROTECT: Ensure you cover the affected area to protect it from the sun.
  5. STRETCH: Gently stretch the burned area for a few minutes every day once it has healed.

Finally, it’s important that you get immediate medical burn care if the burn is severe. Little ones are especially prone to scarring with their delicate skin.

What to bring to Urgent Care for

If you’re coming to see us for immediate burn care, here’s some tips.

  • Ensure you complete the 20 minute cooling with running water
  • If the pain is severe, taking Paracetomal or giving some Pamol to kids is fine.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluid

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:

  • NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
  • International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration

On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.

Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.

This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.

Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.

All consultations are by appointment only.

Patient portals are secure online sites where patients can access their health information and interact with their general practice. Please give us call on (09) 265 1325 or send us an email at info@ormistonmedical.co.nz, and we can set up your account.

We recommend that you plan ahead and request your repeat medicines via your patient portal My Indici two weeks before you run out. If you do not have access to a portal, you can phone us and leave a message with the nurse to organise this. Our doctors use an electronic prescribing system which can send your prescription to your local pharmacy (please specify name and location).

We understand that things can change on the day, but we ask that you call us to advise that you are not able to make your appointment. If we do not hear from you minimum 2 hours prior to your scheduled time, you will receive an invoice for this missed appointment.
